What it is
Jojoba is a golden, odourless liquid wax derived from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis plant. Chemically similar to human sebum, jojoba is prized for its balancing and protective properties. When used as an exfoliant, it appears as smooth, rounded beads made from jojoba esters, which are biodegradable, skin-friendly alternatives to the microplastics once found in scrubs. Jojoba oil has a relatively lightweight oil texture (though it is technically a wax) and is rich in a number of antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin E.
How jojoba works in skincare
Acting as both a humectant and an emollient, jojoba oil is effective at maintaining the skin’s moisture-levels whilst offering soothing and restorative benefits.
Jojoba beads offer gentle physical exfoliation, removing dead skin cells, surface debris and pollutants without damaging the skin’s protective barrier. Because the beads are uniform and non-abrasive, they provide consistent exfoliation without causing micro-tears.
In hand and body care, jojoba-based scrubs leave the skin feeling soft, supple, and renewed. The exfoliation process also enhances the penetration of moisturisers and active ingredients applied afterwards. Jojoba’s natural emollient qualities mean it simultaneously cleanses and conditions, ideal for dry, sensitive and mature skin types. Jojoba is a sustainable, effective way to maintain smooth texture and a healthy skin barrier across both face and body.
