What it is
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that plays a crucial role in protecting and maintaining skin health. In skincare, it’s most commonly used in the form of tocopherol or tocopheryl acetate – two stable, skin-friendly versions that help defend against environmental damage while supporting hydration and repair.
Naturally found in our skin and in ingredients like plant oils, seeds and nuts, vitamin E is often included in face, hand and body care to help soothe, soften and shield. It’s especially popular in formulas designed for dry, mature or compromised skin.
How it works in skincare
Vitamin E is best known for its antioxidant power. It helps neutralise free radicals – unstable molecules triggered by pollution, UV exposure and stress – which can accelerate signs of ageing and damage the skin barrier. By mopping up these reactive molecules, it helps preserve skin structure, calm inflammation and protect collagen.
It’s also deeply moisturising. Because it’s oil-soluble, vitamin E blends beautifully into rich creams and body butters, helping to reinforce the skin’s lipid barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss. This makes it particularly useful in body and hand care where skin tends to be drier, rougher and more exposed.
Another bonus: It enhances the effectiveness of other ingredients. It’s often paired with vitamin C, where it helps stabilise and boost antioxidant activity, and with soothing oils to support barrier function and comfort.
If your skin is dry, sun-stressed or needs support healing from minor irritation or scarring, vitamin E is a go-to. It’s not a fast-acting active, but it’s a powerful protector — and an excellent base for long-term skin resilience.
