Slugging

Slugging is a skincare trend focused on sealing in moisture by applying an occlusive layer, typically petroleum jelly, as the last step in your night-time routine. The term, which conjures images of a shiny, slug-like finish, became a viral sensation on TikTok for its ability to deeply hydrate and repair the skin.

The method works by locking in hydration and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Ideal for dry or compromised skin, slugging strengthens the skin barrier, softens rough patches, and soothes irritation. It’s particularly effective during colder months or after using exfoliants or retinoids.

To slug effectively:

  1. Start with a clean face and apply lightweight hydrating products, such as serums with hyaluronic acid.
  2. Gently layer a thin coat of petroleum jelly over your entire face to seal in the moisture.

Slugging is best suited for dry or normal skin types. Those with oily or acne-prone skin should proceed cautiously, as occlusives may trap excess oil and exacerbate breakouts. By integrating slugging into your skincare routine, you can wake up to plumper, healthier-looking skin.
