Occlusives

Occlusives are a type of skincare ingredient that form a protective barrier on the skin, helping to lock in moisture and prevent water loss. They are particularly beneficial for those with dry or dehydrated skin, as they create a seal that keeps hydration where it’s needed. Common occlusives include ingredients like petrolatum, shea butter, and certain plant-based oils.

By reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier, occlusives help to protect against environmental stressors such as cold weather and pollution, which can strip moisture from the skin. They work best when combined with humectants, like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which draw water into the skin before the occlusive ingredient locks it in.

While occlusives are essential for maintaining hydration, they can sometimes feel heavy on the skin, making them more suited to evening routines or colder months when skin is more prone to dryness. For those with oily or acne-prone skin, lightweight occlusives such as squalane or dimethicone can offer hydration without clogging pores.

For both your face and skin below the chin, whether in the form of a rich balm, a nourishing oil, or a protective cream, occlusives play a key role in any well-rounded skincare routine, helping to keep skin soft, smooth, and resilient.
