Collagen

Collagen is a protein that keeps skin firm, elastic, and youthful. As we age, natural collagen production declines, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Collagen-boosting products, such as retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C, help maintain skin structure.

Some opt for collagen supplements, though evidence varies. Protecting existing collagen with SPF and antioxidants is key to preserving a youthful complexion.

Does Collagen in skincare Work?

Topical collagen products are often marketed as a way to improve skin elasticity and hydration, but they don’t work the way users think because of the science of skin absorption and molecule size.

Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the outermost layer of the skin, called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is designed to act as a protective barrier, preventing large substances from entering the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, collagen applied topically cannot reach the dermis, where it would need to be to stimulate collagen production or provide structural benefits.

Instead, topical collagen products may provide a temporary smoothing or hydrating effect on the skin’s surface by forming a film, which helps retain moisture. While this can give the skin a more plumped appearance temporarily, it does not address deeper skin concerns like loss of elasticity or collagen degradation.

For meaningful results, I recommend products like retinoids, which stimulate collagen production within the skin, or procedures like microneedling and laser therapy that can target the dermis directly and far more effectively.
