What it is
Xerosis is the medical term for dry skin. It occurs when the skin lacks moisture due to a weakened barrier, low humidity, or underlying conditions such as eczema or ageing-related changes. It often presents as tightness, flaking, rough texture, and irritation.
How it works in skincare
Emollients and occlusives, such as ceramides, shea butter and petrolatum, help lock in hydration and create a protective layer to prevent further water loss.
Humectants, including hyaluronic acid and glycerin, attract water into the skin, supporting deep and lasting hydration. Gentle cleansing is also key, as harsh soaps or fragranced products can strip moisture and worsen dryness. Using mild, fragrance-free cleansers helps maintain the skin’s natural balance.
Barrier repair is another important focus. Ingredients such as niacinamide and fatty acids work to strengthen the skin’s defences, improving resilience and reducing sensitivity. Together, these approaches support healthier, smoother and more comfortable skin.
Consistent moisturization and avoiding excessive exfoliation can significantly improve xerosis and restore skin comfort.
