Witch Hazel

What it is

Witch hazel is a plant extract often used in toners, cleansers, and spot treatments. It contains natural compounds called tannins, which have astringent and antioxidant properties.

How it works in skincare

Witch hazel is commonly used in skincare for its balancing and soothing properties. It is best known for helping to control excess oil, which can reduce surface shine and the appearance of enlarged pores, particularly in oil prone or combination skin.

It is also valued for its calming effect. Witch hazel can help soothe mild irritation, redness and inflammation, making it a popular ingredient in products designed for sensitive or reactive skin. In blemish focused formulas, it is often included for its anti inflammatory benefits, supporting clearer looking skin without feeling heavy or occlusive.

You will also find witch hazel in toners and facial mists, where it provides a refreshing, cooling sensation that leaves the skin feeling clean and comfortable after cleansing.

When to Be Cautious

Witch hazel can be drying, especially if it has a high alcohol content. Regular use may disrupt the skin barrier in sensitive, dry or eczema-prone skin. It can also worsen redness and irritation in rosacea.

If you have oily or combination skin, alcohol-free witch hazel products may offer some benefit. If your skin is dry, sensitive or reactive, it is best to avoid it or use it sparingly. Popular alternatives include cica, niacinamide and green tea extract.
