Skin Barrier

The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the skin that acts as a protective shield. Composed of skin cells held together by lipids, it prevents water loss and shields against environmental aggressors like pollution, irritants, and microbes.

A compromised skin barrier can manifest as redness, dryness, sensitivity, or even breakouts. Common culprits include over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers, and environmental factors like cold weather or pollution.

Rebuilding the skin barrier involves prioritising hydration and nourishment. Ingredients such as ceramides, fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid are excellent for barrier repair. Gentle cleansing and avoiding overly drying or irritating products are also key steps in recovery.

A strong skin barrier is essential not just for skin health but also for ensuring other skincare products work effectively. Maintaining this layer is the foundation for any effective skincare routine.
