What It Is:
Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that speeds up skin cell production, leading to thick, scaly patches. It is primarily caused by an overactive immune system, leading to accelerated skin cell growth and inflammation. While the exact trigger is unknown, genetics and environmental factors are thought to play a role.
Stress, infections, and certain medications can also trigger or worsen psoriasis symptoms. Common areas include the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
What It Looks Like:
It appears as raised, red patches covered with silvery scales. In some cases, it may crack or bleed.
Treatment:
Topical treatments like salicylic acid, coal tar, or corticosteroids are effective. Phototherapy and systemic medications may be necessary for severe cases.
