What it is
Hydrocolloid is a moisture-retentive material widely used in wound healing and skincare. Hydrocolloid contains gel-forming agents such as pectin, gelatin and carboxymethylcellulose that interact with wound fluid to form a soft, protective gel. Originally designed for medical dressings, hydrocolloid has since been adopted into acne care as a gentle, effective way to support skin recovery.
How hydrocolloid works in skincare
When placed over a spot or broken skin, hydrocolloid absorbs excess oil, pus, and fluid while keeping the area protected, which encourages faster, cleaner healing. Hydrocolloid shields the blemish from bacteria and pollutants, and prevents picking and further irritation.
By creating a slightly occlusive barrier, hydrocolloid helps calm inflammation and reduce blemishes overnight. Some newer patches are infused with active ingredients such as salicylic acid and niacinamide to enhance their effect. Patches are ideal for treating individual spots or protecting minor abrasions, promoting a calm and balanced complexion without stripping or drying the skin.
