UV Damage

What it is

UV damage refers to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources (such as tanning beds) on the skin. UV rays penetrate the skin, leading to oxidative stress, DNA damage and degradation of collagen and elastin.

How it works in skincare

UV exposure has a cumulative effect on the skin and is one of the main drivers of visible skin ageing and long term skin damage. Over time, repeated sun exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and a loss of firmness. This process is often referred to as photoageing and can affect all skin tones.

Sun exposure can also trigger hyperpigmentation, resulting in sunspots, melasma and uneven skin tone. In addition to changes you can see, UV radiation causes DNA damage within skin cells. This damage can lead to mutations that increase the risk of skin cancer over time.

UV exposure weakens the skin barrier, making skin more prone to sensitivity, dehydration and irritation from environmental stressors such as pollution and temperature changes. When the barrier is compromised, skin often feels tight, reactive or textured.

Prevention plays a crucial role in protecting skin health. Daily use of a broad spectrum SPF, combined with antioxidants and appropriate after sun care, can help minimise UV damage and support the skin’s ability to repair itself over time.

How to Repair UV-Damaged Skin

You can’t fully reverse UV damage, but you can reduce its effects.

Retinoids & Peptides: Boost collagen, improve texture and smooth fine lines.
Antioxidants (Vitamin C, Niacinamide): Fight free radicals and brighten skin.
Exfoliating Acids & Pigment Inhibitors: Fade sunspots and even out tone.
Professional Treatments (Laser, Peels, IPL): Target deeper damage – you can also see my services for this here.
Barrier Repair & Sunscreen: Strengthen skin and prevent further harm.
Prevention is key: daily SPF and antioxidants help stop future damage.
