Best Body Washes for Dry Skin

Dry skin needs a cleanser that lifts away dirt, sweat and product residue without disrupting the natural lipid barrier that holds moisture in. Many conventional body washes use harsh surfactants that strip the skin, leaving it tight and itchy and contributing to the discomfort dry skin experiences day to day.

The formulas below have been selected for their gentle, hydrating cleansing systems and the supporting ingredients that calm, soothe and protect the skin barrier during and after washing.

What Ingredients Should You Look for in a Body Wash for Dry Skin?

The most important consideration for dry skin is the cleansing system itself. Mild, non-sulphate surfactants such as decyl glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoyl glutamate are well-tolerated and gentle. Beyond the cleansing base, humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw moisture into the skin during the wash, while ceramides and emollients such as shea butter, sunflower seed oil and squalane help reinforce the lipid barrier.

Soothing agents like colloidal oatmeal, niacinamide and allantoin add comfort and help calm visible redness or sensitivity. Fragrance and essential oils are common triggers for dry, reactive skin and are best avoided in regular use.

How Often Should You Use Body Wash for Dry Skin?

A daily shower with a gentle, hydrating body wash is appropriate for most people. Water temperature matters as much as the cleanser itself and lukewarm water is far less drying than hot water. After rinsing, the skin should be patted dry rather than rubbed, and a moisturiser should be applied within three minutes to lock in hydration while the skin is still damp. For very dry or eczema-prone skin, alternating between body wash and water-only rinses can also help reduce overall dryness while maintaining hygiene.
