What they are
Walnut shell scrubs are trending currently as physical exfoliants that use ground walnut shells to remove dead skin cells. They are known for their gritty texture and the sensation of manual exfoliation. Although they are described as natural, the coarse, uneven particles can be harsh on the skin and are not recommended for sensitive or compromised skin types.
How they work
The scrub works by mechanically buffing away surface cells. However, the irregular shape of walnut shell particles can cause microtears in the skin. This can lead to redness, sensitivity, and increased vulnerability to irritation.
Chemical exfoliants such as lactic, mandelic or salicylic acid offer a more even and controlled way to exfoliate. They help dissolve bonds between dull surface cells without scratching the skin.
Walnut shell scrubs are particularly unsuitable for facial use, where the skin is delicate. They can also aggravate dry hands and legs in winter, especially if the barrier is already compromised. For body care, gentler alternatives such as enzyme exfoliants or finely milled physical scrubs provide a smoother, safer experience.
