What is a Skin Tag?

Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths that hang off the skin, often appearing in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are composed of collagen and blood vessels, surrounded by a thin layer of skin. They are generally harmless and don’t cause pain. They may become irritated if they are in areas of friction, but otherwise, they are simply a cosmetic concern.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags are caused by friction, which can irritate the skin and encourage the growth of extra tissue. Factors that increase the likelihood of developing them include:

Friction – Areas like the neck, armpits, and groin are more prone due to constant movement.

Genetics – A family history of tags can make you more likely to develop them.

Age – They become more common with age, particularly after 40.

Obesity – Excess skin folds from weight gain can increase friction, leading to more tags.

Skin Tags and Menopause

Skin tags can become more common during or after menopause due to hormonal changes. The body’s reduced production of estrogen can cause changes in skin elasticity and lead to more frequent tag formation. Increased weight gain and changes in skin elasticity during menopause can also contribute to the development of skin tags.

How to Treat Skin Tags

While they don’t require medical treatment, many people choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons or to prevent irritation. Treatment options include:

Cryotherapy – Freezing off the tag with liquid nitrogen.

Excision – A doctor can cut off the skin tag with sterile instruments.

Electrosurgery – Burning the tag off with a small electrical charge.

Over-the-counter treatments – Some products are available to dry out or shrink skin tags, but professional removal is often safer.

It’s best to avoid attempting to remove skin tags yourself to prevent infection or scarring. If you are concerned about the appearance of any tags or if they change in size or colour, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist.
