Hair Loss

What it is

While hair shedding is a natural process, excessive or noticeable thinning can be distressing and often signals underlying issues.

Hair loss can result from various factors:

  • Hormonal changes, such as postpartum hair shedding or menopause.
  • Stress-related telogen effluvium, where more hairs enter the shedding phase.
  • Nutritional deficiencies, such as low iron or vitamin D levels.
  • Genetics, including male or female pattern baldness.

Evidence-based treatments include minoxidil, a topical solution that stimulates hair growth and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to enhance scalp health. Hormonal treatments and medications such as finasteride and oral minoxidil may be prescribed. Nutrition also plays a role; incorporating a diet rich in protein, biotin and essential fatty acids supports healthier hair growth.

A dermatologist can help identify the root cause and suggest tailored treatments. Consistency is key with any hair loss solution, as regrowth typically takes several months.
