Skin infections are common and may be caused by a variety of organisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi/yeast and parasites such as mites. Skin infections can be acute or chronic, mild or severe depending on the type of organism and areas involved. Underlying conditions such as obesity, diabetes and immunosuppression, as well as certain medications may increase susceptibility to infection.
Examples of skin infections:
Bacterial: folliculitis, impetigo and cellulitis
Viral: herpes simplex (cold sores), herpes zoster (chickenpox/shingles) and warts
Fungal/yeast: candidiasis, tinea versicolor, tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch) and onychomycosis (nail infection)
Parasitic: pediculosis (lice) and scabies
Treatment for skin infections may include:
- Topical cream
- Oral medication
- Cryotherapy
