What is Profhilo?

Skin science is always advancing and even after many years of medical practice, I love learning about new developments in skincare and cosmetic treatments.  Some of the terminology and the science behind skin treatments can seem complex and difficult to understand.  An important part of my practice is making sure my patients feel informed, so we can work together to achieve their skin goals.

In my monthly journal, I give you the inside track on some of the most popular treatments performed in my clinic every day to help patients feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and skin confident. This month’s ‘tweakment’ under the spotlight is Profhilo.

Profhilo is a highly purified injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) treatment. Delivered directly into the dermis, Profhilo hydrates from the inside out, resulting in smoother, plumper and more glowing skin.  This treatment also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin over time, helping to improve skin tone and the appearance of fine lines. Profhilo distributes smoothly and evenly due to its consistency, allowing it to flow over a broad area and give a refreshed, natural result.

What is Profhilo used for?

Profhilo is especially effective for people whose skin lacks moisture and elasticity. Levels of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin reduce over time resulting in signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and lacklustre skin. Profhilo addresses these issues, improving skin tone, texture, hydration and overall radiance. The face is the most commonly treated area, but Profhilo can also be used to rejuvenate the neck, décolletage, knees and hands.

What to expect during a Profhilo treatment?

Profhilo is a two-part treatment with each session 4-6 weeks apart. Profhilo is injected just under the skin’s surface using very fine needles across ten pre-determined points. Facial treatment involves five small injections on either side of the face. After injection, the hyaluronic acid disperses quickly beneath the skin to improve hydration. Gradually skin begins to produce new collagen and elastin to give you a firmer, smoother, plumper complexion.

How long does Profhilo treatment take?

Each session lasts between 15-30 mins.  A single course of two treatments can be repeated every six months as required to maintain the results.

Downtime as a result of Profhilo treatment

There is minimal downtime after the procedure, although as with all injectable treatments, there is a risk of bruising. You will be able to see small bumps at the injection site and some patients report a slight tenderness for 24-72 hours. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours following treatment. We also advise against taking a hot bath, steam or sauna on the day of treatment.

How quickly will you see results and how long does Profhilo last?

Hydration will be boosted and you may see some improvement in skin laxity and texture after the first treatment with Profhilo. Full results are seen after the second session as your skin begins to produce more collagen and elastin.

When do I recommend Profhilo?

Profhilo is an effective treatment for those who feel they have tired, dull-looking skin. I recommend Profhilo to patients who tell me they feel uncomfortable with excess skin laxity, complain of crepey skin or other visible signs of ageing such as fine lines or wrinkles. Profhilo is often used in conjunction with other treatments including natural skin rejuvenating therapy PRP and the AQUAGOLD skin brightening treatment.
